今回の地震について、東京大学の阿部勝征名誉教授は「今回の地震が起きた地域はフィリピン海プレートと呼ばれる海底の岩盤が、南から陸の岩盤の下に沈み込んでいる影響で、地震活動が活発になることがあり、過去にも今回と同じ程度の地震が繰り返し起きている」と述べました。
